How AI may be used in current cyber attacks: 2023 changes everything

Updated: May 2, 2023

As AI technologies continue to advance, cyber attackers may leverage AI in various ways to launch more sophisticated and targeted attacks on businesses' cellphones. Here are some potential scenarios:

AI-powered social engineering: Cybercriminals could use AI to create more convincing fake personas or chatbots that can interact with employees on the company's cellphones or other devices. These fake personas could be used to trick employees into divulging sensitive information or performing actions that could compromise the company's security. VALL-E is an artificial intelligence (AI) speech synthesizer developed by Microsoft that can closely clone and manipulate a person’s voice.

AI-powered malware: Cybercriminals could use AI algorithms to create more advanced and sophisticated malware that can evade detection by traditional security solutions. For example, AI could be used to automate the creation of polymorphic malware that changes its code to avoid detection.

Automated phishing attacks: AI-powered phishing attacks could become more effective by using machine learning to craft more convincing phishing emails that mimic the writing style and behavior of a specific employee or group of employees within a company. AI could also be used to automate the identification and exploitation of vulnerabilities in the company's systems and networks.

AI-powered botnets: Cyber attackers could use AI to create more effective and resilient botnets that can coordinate attacks on a large scale. For example, an AI-powered botnet could use machine learning to adapt its attack strategy based on the defences it encounters.
